Marva Wright
If you haven't heard her music yet, you don't know what you're missing. Her name is Marva Wright. She's a gutsy, vibrant, energetic entertainer who gives her heart and soul when she sings.
Marva's musical roots are in gospel. She was soloist for the St. John Baptist Youth Choir, the Geraldine Wright Christian Four Gospel Singers, Samuel Berfect and the Dimensions of Faith, and the Greater St. Stephen's Baptist Church Inspirational Youth Choir including its radio and television mass choirs.
Born and Raised in New Orleans, Marva is among the growing number of versatile and talented female vocalists emerging from the city known for it music. Whether performing on stage at concerts, nightclubs, riverboats, hotel ballrooms or convention centers, Marva sings the blues like nobody else.
It seems that she's singing just for you as the familiar gospel and blues standards come to life in her own sultry style. You can't help but snap your fingers, tap your feet, clap your hands or get up and dance. Audiences are overwhelmed by Marva's electrifying performances and give her prolonged ovations and acclaim.
She has appeared with Fats Domino, Koko Taylor, Lou Rawls, Maria Muldare, Linda Hopkins, Aaron Neville, Johnny Adams, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Bobby McFerrin, Marcia Ball, Harry Connick, Jr., and many others. Marva has recorded backup vocals for Joe Cocker, Glen Campbell and Allen Toussaint and has done numerous voice overs for radio, television and film.
Her first single, "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean" was recorded live at Tipitina's in January of 1989. In 1990 Marva performed on national television for the Saturday night Super Bowl special in New Orleans, and later that year completed her first album, "Heartbreakin' Woman," which was awarded Blues Album of the Year by the Louisiana Music Critic's Association and one of the top-ten albums of the year in New Orleans by the Times Picayune. Marva has been nominated twice by the Big Easy Awards for the best performing female artist.
She has performed at concerts and festivals in Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Holland, France and Belgium as well as in the United States and has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for the past 17 years.
