Dorothy Fields
(1904-1974)
One of the few women to achieve success in the male-dominated world of songwriting, Fields' career spanned six decades, from I Can't Give You Anything But Love in 1927, to the Broadway musical Seesaw in 1973. Other classic Fields lyrics include On the Sunny Side of the Street and Big Spender. She won the Academy Award for The Way You Look Tonight in 1936.
In 1996 the United States Postal Service recognized Harold Arlen when it issued the Songwriters Commemorative stamps. The four subjects for the Songwriters stamps are among the most popular and successful composers of all time: Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Dorothy Fields, and Johnny Mercer.
