Power vs. Gentleness
The subject of this image is a little girl looking at the breaking waves with a longing. As she looks at the water,
she is wondered by the powerful waves crashing down onto the shore. The photograph is portraying the power
and mightiness of the ocean’s waves and comparing them to the gentleness of the child. As you can see, the
work is a little slanted to show a larger view of the sky and the subject. I shot this image with the horizon higher than usual to place the focus on the little girl and make the ocean dominate the background.
The footprints in the distance show that others have walked that way with confidence. Now, she is hesitating as
if she could be brave and take that step forward and follow those who have gone before her. As the subject is
about to advance toward the water, she is unaware of the dangers that will be before her. This picture basically
portrays the amazing, power, and wonder of the ocean and compares it to the small, gentleness of the child
that is unaware of the dangers that will be before her.
